This image shows forebrain neurons differentiated from H9 human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Functional synapses and neuronal type (glutamatergic) are confirmed with co-localisation of two synapse markers; synaptophysin and post-synaptic density protein 95 (PSD95)in red and far-red, respectively. The blue staining is for DAPI/nuclei and green staining indicates B-III-tubulin (a well-known neuronal marker). Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease appear due to loss of neuronal communication by the disease pathophysiology. The level of the synapse markers would indicate how well the neurons can communicate with each other, hence a potential tool for studying Alzheimer's disease.
