Description: Great balls of...FAT!
Submitted by: Mike Doran (Translational Research Institute, QUT)

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) can be isolated from a variety of tissues including bone marrow, fat tissue, and the placenta. These cells are often referred to as “stem” or “progenitor” cells, as a result of their potential to produce fat, bone and cartilage in the laboratory, and possibly contribute to tissue repair or healing in the body. In this picture, human MSC from bone marrow have been induced to produce fat microtissues. With their perfect symmetry and abundance of glorious fat droplets, they are fascinating to look at! Lipid droplets are red (stained with oil red o) and nuclei are stained blue (DAPI), and the image captured using confocal microscopy.
